The Visual Marketing Revolution and the Great Color Scheme

The recent rise in popularity of sites like Instagram and Pintrest have drawn attention to the importance of being able to create quality visuals as a marketer. Unfortunately, not all marketers were created equally, and may not have all of the skills or money needed to create such content. A recent Hubspot article emphasized 13 tools that are not only awesome, but, best of all, FREE! One of the sites in particular,, is revolutionizing the way people choose color schemes. The site basically takes photos with bold, striking colors and draws a palette from those photos. Each color scheme is creatively named after the content it is derived from; “winter chirp” being one of my favorite.


Now you might be thinking to yourself, “Why should I use these color-schemes; I know what looks good!” Great question! Chances are you didn’t go to school for design, and are by no means a color specialist. That’s where Design Seeds comes in. The owner of the site has nearly 20 years of experience as a color specialist for top companies such as Ford, Timberland and others. As illustrated in lhbrockbank’s post, colors can make or break you as a marketer and communicate a great deal to your potential consumers on a subconscious level. By having visual examples that represent each color palate, you are more easily able to get an understanding for how each palette will communicate particular emotions as well as drop-dead-sexy palettes that took you little more effort than a search to find (the search tools are pretty effective and allow you to search for a particular color or by theme).

It’s very important to maintain an idea of WHAT you are trying to communicate, however. Don’t arbitrarily choose a color scheme because it’s “pretty.” Make sure to use colors that reinforce your message. Remember, though a pretty color scheme is not the driving factor to a marketer’s success, visual appeal is often needed to capture your audience’s attention so that they take the time to read your awesome content!   1. I love how this post talks about the effect of emotions, in regards to picking a color theme. Specific brands bring out specific emotions in everyone. I think that sometimes people forget that specific color shade can bring out those emotions. This is especially important when everyone now thinks they are “artist” through the use of instagram.

  2. As an individual, I often pick things because they are “pretty” and are visually appealing to me, however this post has proven the importance of choosing colors for a specific reason. I find it so completely interesting that colors correspond with emotions and can change between cultures. It’s always important to pick colors that reinforce your message! I really appreciate this article, as a designer color is one of the most important aspects of a website that should always have an active relationship with the graphics, photos, and content within the site. I enjoy the non specific advice given to the reader to just provide helpful content to individuals and/or companies that cannot afford or do not wish to hire a designer. Although seemingly mundane, the chosen colors of a site can affect the effectiveness of a company to release content and engage consumers. Colors evoke certain emotions and the fact that this helps chose colors through the pictures that will be included can really help in the long run.

  4. Sometimes if you’re not an expert in design you don’t even realize the affects colors can have on people. So it’s vital in marketing that even if you don’t have a degree in design as well that you work with someone who does so that the right message gets across, like Lauren was saying in her post.

  5. This is something that I feel is often forgotten when marketing a product or even a brand. Given that there smaller businesses are using social media as a way to brand their company and reach consumers, I think that this is a necessary thing to utilize and have. Like you mentioned, many companies cannot afford to hire a graphic designer or a marketing specialist who is aware of the effect color can have on emotion and what it communicates to the consumer.

  6. Since my major deals with some aspects of design I had an understanding of how much a color scheme can effect the message you are trying to portray. I actually recently used this website in my magazine design class. Our project is to create a cook book that is shaped around fall foods. This was very useful to help choose the correct colors that will pertain to fall. We also had to make sure that we choose colors that correlate with hunger but also display fall as well.

  7. It’s important to take note that hues are not incorporated into branding because of how pretty they are, but also because of the emotional effect they have on people. For example, according to, Blue is believed to be a soothing color, while red is used for stimulation (Color Psychology, How Color Impact Moods, Feelings, and Behaviors).

  8. Color influence is everywhere around us. It’s widely known that yellows and reds make us feel hungry, and is therefore popularized by many fast food restaurants including McDonald’s. It’s interesting to think about how color theory is manipulated in society today. For example, since yellow is a cautionary color, it’s used as the “slow” signal for traffic signs. Do we innately have reactions to these colors, or do these color’s applications influence the way we react and behave to them? I think it’s a combination of both, and it’s important to see how your brand’s colors will be interpreted by your audience.

  9. Color is such an important factor to consider when designing a site or anything for that matter. Color alone can evoke a emotion in the viewer. This article is amazing and as a designer I love seeing sites like these that can help people who may not have to expertise to create a visually appealing site. I actually bookmarked the article so I can use these tools later!
